Why does the NDIS cover speech pathology?

Many people take for granted the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, and swallow safely.

For adults or children with a disability or health condition affecting their speech, communication and swallowing, daily life tasks can be particularly difficult.

Acknowledging this, the NDIS covers evidence-based speech pathology services for some NDIS participants.

Receiving support from a highly-trained, professional speech therapist can help with:

  • Voice (speech production)
  • Language (understanding/speaking)
  • Speech (word production)
  • Literacy (reading/writing)
  • Fluency (such as stuttering)
  • Swallowing (safe eating/drinking)

By supporting NDIS participants to be able to express themselves more clearly and confidently, they experience more ease of living, feel more independent, and can increase their social and community interaction.

What does speech therapy involve?

LifeLift’s NDIS approved speech therapists begin by assessing what specific speech and language supports will offer the greatest benefits to you as an individual.

Our speech pathologists may be able to make a diagnosis, and will recommend evidence-based interventions and strategies to help clients better manage their condition. We can also undertake risk assessments.

We then deliver customised therapy sessions, coordinate progress reports, and adapt speech therapy plans (as needed) to maximise benefits to NDIS participants.

LifeLift NDIS speech therapists can also recommend and help clients use new technologies (ie. speech generating devices, iPads) or other communication tools. We also work with families, carers, teachers and other health professionals to enhance the results for clients.

Swallowing support may include advising on oral health, oral intake, environmental setup, positioning, assistance devices, saliva management dealing with coughing, choking and chewing, and more.

LifeLift. Helping you enjoy life more.
