Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) exists to fund personalised support to people who live with ongoing disability.

To ensure NDIS participants receive the right level of support and funding, providers like our experienced team at LifeLift are approved to carry out Functional Capacity Assessments. These assessments provide the evidence the NDIA requires to match participants with the most appropriate supports.

What is Functional Capacity?

Functional capacity refers to a person’s functional capacity including child’s functional capacity to carry out everyday meaningful activities and tasks without support on their daily life. This includes personal care and social skills such as bathing, dressing, eating, mobility, cooking, shopping, driving, laundry, working, caring for children, communication, learning, physical function including hand function, and more.

At LifeLift, our caring, person-centred Occupational Therapists (OTs) are NDIS approved and have undergone Functional Capacity Assessment training to be able to carry out NDIS functional capacity assessments. Sometimes these are done before a hospital discharge.

Our mobile OTs can undertake Functional Capacity Assessments for NDIS participants in Perth and select parts of regional WA from Monday to Friday.

What is a NDIS Functional Capacity Assessment?

A functional assessment done for the NDIS must be done by a NDIS registered occupational therapist.

There are functional assessment tools and frameworks that our experienced therapists use to determine a NDIS participants’ everyday life functioning but the exact nature of your assessment may be linked to the type of impairment or disability you have.

The National Disabiilty insurance Agency, which oversees the NDIS, is looking to see if a person’s disability has reduced or substantially reduced functional capacity by focusing on everyday functioning within six specific life skill areas:

  • Communication
  • Social interaction
  • Learning
  • Mobility
  • Self-care
  • Self-management

Funding for Functional Capacity Assessments can be included in your NDIS plan under Capacity Building supports.

How is a NDIS functional capacity assessment done?

LifeLift OTs meet face-to-face with NDIS participants to understand their meaningful goals, medical background, and treatment history.

During the assessment, you may be asked to perform everyday tasks, or the OT may consult your carer or guardian (with consent).

We use standardised tools, frameworks, and assessment templates to ensure accuracy. Our OTs also consider whether the support you require is within normal age-related expectations.

This independent process identifies the right supports for your NDIS plan and may include recommendations for:

  • Home modifications
  • Assistive technology and equipment
  • Vehicle modifications
  • Therapy or rehabilitation services
  • Appliances and aids

Our goal is to ensure your assessment reflects your unique situation, empowering you to access the right supports.
